THE NATIONAL DAY ACTIVITY WAS ORGANIZED BY COMMUNITY MEMBERS IN COLLABORATION WITH THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH.
High incidences of non-communicable diseases in Saint Lucia and the Caribbean region have caused health experts to advise control measures. Within the region, hypertension and diabetes continue to register as the number one cause of death and as such, health agencies have been implementing intervention strategies. One such strategy is to encourage people to engage in more physical activity.
Recently, residents participated in an early morning exercise dubbed “Saint Lucia Wake up and Run”. The activity was organized by a member of the community, with support from key agencies such as the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs.
Saint Lucia Wake Up and Run organizer and Vieux-Fort resident, Ronnie Harris, said the activity was geared at encouraging Saint Lucians to adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles. He hopes to motivate more individuals into daily exercise routines.
Harris said the activity surpassed his expectations as a wide cross-sector of individuals participated, with positive reviews from participants and members of the community.
The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs through its “Saint Lucia Moves Campaign” has endorsed the Saint Lucia Wake Up and Run” activity.
Dr. Shana Cyr-Philbert, Senior Medical Officer for Non-Communicable Diseases within the Ministry of Health, said: “This activity is part and parcel of what we as a Ministry of Health are trying to do, and we want to applaud Mr. Harris’ efforts and all who came out in support this National Day. We encourage the general public to continue moving.”
High praises also came from the Health Minister and Parliamentary Representative for Vieux-Fort North, Hon. Moses Jn. Baptiste.
“I am pleased to see the number of people who are here and I want to congratulate Mr. Ronnie Harris and his team. I know a lot of people are working with him, and I want to encourage everyone to continue to get up and move.”
The walk began and culminated at the John Odlum Stadium and took the participants through the town of Vieux Fort.
