A SERIES OF PRESENTATIONS AIMED TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ON THE CRITICAL BENEFITS OF BREASTFEEDING.

The Vieux Fort Wellness Centre has placed a special focus on improving breastfeeding support, during Saint Lucia’s month-long observance of World Breastfeeding Week.

A series of presentations were held on Aug. 14, that aimed to educate mothers, staff, and the public on the critical benefits of breastfeeding. The event featured presentations on key topics such as nutrition during and after pregnancy, testimonies about the importance of breastfeeding, breast care, proper milk expression and storage techniques, and the correct latching techniques.

Francillia Joseph, the Field Nutrition Officer for Regions Four and Five, highlighted the need for enhanced support for breastfeeding mothers, and advocated for structural changes in the workplace to better support breastfeeding mothers.

“This year, we want to focus on the support aspect of breastfeeding. We aim to provide timely and accurate information for women and their families, along with practical emotional support to promote optimal breastfeeding. Workplaces also should provide a breastfeeding space for mothers and be mindful of breastfeeding times so that adequate maternity time can be allocated," she explained.

Breast milk is recognized as the optimal source of nutrition for infants from birth to six months, providing all the necessary nutrients in the right amounts. It plays a crucial role in building a strong immune system in babies and can also lower the risk of postpartum depression in mothers, a condition affecting up to 15 percent of new mothers.

The breastfeeding presentations held at the Vieux Fort Wellness Centre is part of a broader series of activities planned throughout the month, designed to enhance community awareness and support for breastfeeding, ultimately fostering a healthier start for both mothers and their babies.
