The Consulate in New York, along with the Saint Lucia House Foundation will host a week’s worth of activities leading up to Jounen Kwéyòl.
The Consulate General of Saint Lucia in New York in collaboration with the Saint Lucia House Foundation is celebrating Creole Heritage Month in New York via a series of educational, cultural and culinary activities.
Today, the Consulate will feature an exhibition titled “The Kwéyòl Exhibition: Saint Lucian Collection.” The three-day exhibition depicts the rich cultural history of Saint Lucia via the display of crafts, historical artifacts and literature.
Following the exhibition, on Oct 24, the Saint Lucia House Foundation will host a Night of Culture and Storytelling that will highlight and celebrate several aspects of Saint Lucian traditions.
The festivities will culminate at the Saint Lucia House on Oct. 26, with an official Jounen Kwéyòl celebration. The focus of that event will be authentic Saint Lucian cuisine and beverages. The event will also feature folk storytellers, La Woz (the Rose) groups, and local and Creole entertainment.
Last week, the two bodies organized a special event in honor of the late Dame Marie Selipha Descartes, better known as Sesenne. The event, held on October 16, celebrated Saint Lucia’s two flower festivals and the contributions of Ms. Descartes to the island’s folk song and dance traditions.
Ms. Descartes was awarded the British Empire Medal in 1972, and in 1984 was proclaimed the “Queen of Culture” in Saint Lucia.
