A STAKEHOLDER CONSULTATION WILL EXPLORE OPPORTUNITIES TO FACILITATE THE IMPLEMENTATION OF NATIONALLY DETERMINED CONTRIBUTIONS.
In an effort to fulfill its obligations to the Paris Agreement, the Government of Saint Lucia, through the Department of Sustainable Development, will host a stakeholders’ consultation to chart the way forward for the implementation of its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC).
Saint Lucia’s NDC was communicated to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in 2015 during the historic Conference of Parties – COP 21. It focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 16 and 23 percent by 2025 and 2030, respectively. It is anticipated that this will be achieved by implementing interventions in the energy, electricity generation and transport sectors. These interventions will be based on a mix of solar, wind and geothermal energy initiatives.
Through participation by local and regional energy and transport stakeholders of the private and public sectors, the consultation will seek to review and enhance Saint Lucia’s NDC, explore opportunities to facilitate the implementation of Saint Lucia’s NDC and identify and possibly formulate and enhance strategic interventions, partnerships and plans that will create the required landscape necessary to attract critical technical and financial support.
The Nationally Determined Contributions Partnership Support Unit and the GIZ, on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, are providing support to the Department of Sustainable Development for this process. Ultimately, Saint Lucia is aiming to develop a suite of bankable or investment-ready projects that will help to achieve the NDC targets.
Minister with responsibility for Sustainable Development, Hon. Dr. Gale Rigobert, has assured of the country’s commitment to meeting the agreed obligations. Minister Rigobert is also the ministerial co-lead on the ‘Ambition’ work stream to the High Ambition Coalition (HAC), which serves to ensure that countries maintain an ambitious climate agenda.
“Saint Lucia remains committed to fighting climate change by being at the forefront of regional and international efforts. Ensuring the strategic harnessing of all resources as we work towards the achievement of the targets in our NDC, is yet another valiant effort by this Small Island Developing State, as we continue to demonstrate our commitment in supporting the global climate change agenda. The Department looks forward to the usual positive support and valuable contribution from stakeholders,” Dr. Rigobert said.
The consultation will take place at the Bay Gardens Hotel on Jan. 29, at 8:30 a.m.
