HON. PHILIP J. PIERRE UNDERSCORES THE IMPORTANCE OF INDEPENDENCE, AND ITS EFFECT ON PRESENT DAY CITIZENS.
Prime Minister Hon. Philip J. Pierre, on the occasion of Saint Lucia’s 46th anniversary of independence, reflected on Saint Lucia’s journey to independence and the importance of being an independent nation.
“My fellow Saint Lucians, we gather here today unified in purpose, to celebrate 46 years of Independence. On February 22, 1979, we raised our flag and began our journey to independence.
“This journey of Independence has enabled us to shape our policies, develop our economy, and advocate for our national interests on the world stage. We have freely engaged in regional and international cooperation and strengthened our democratic institutions while preserving our unique Saint Lucian identity. Independence gives us the power to decide our path, the solemn responsibility to promote fairness, justice, and opportunity for all, as well as the preservation of the dignity of our people.”
The prime minister also made mention of the trailblazers who helped define Saint Lucia’s identity post-independence.
“I speak of the late sir John Compton; Fr. Charles Jesse, who wrote the national anthem; the designer of the national flag, Hon. Dunstan St. Omer; and the first Governor General, Sir Frederick Clark. They all deserve a place in the annals of Saint Lucia’s history.”
The prime minister said the annual observance is an opportunity to honour the past, celebrate achievements, and renew a shared commitment to unity, resilience, and prosperity in Saint Lucia.
