HE STATES NO OFFICIAL COMMUNICATION HAS BEEN RECEIVED ABOUT SAINT LUCIA BEING PLACED ON A WATCHLIST.
Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, the Honorable Philip J. Pierre has addressed recent international developments affecting Saint Lucia, including an inquiry from the United States regarding the employment of Cuban medical personnel, and reports suggesting the island may have been placed on a U.S. watchlist.
During a recent press briefing, Prime Minister Pierre acknowledged the receipt of a diplomatic note from the U.S. government concerning Cuban doctors employed in Saint Lucia. He emphasized that these professionals have been an integral part of the country’s healthcare system since 1979 and are treated no differently from local medical staff.
"The Cuban doctors who work in Saint Lucia are professionals. They are paid by the government of Saint Lucia, and they receive no special or different treatment from our local doctors. Our medical system would basically collapse without them," Pierre stated.
The Prime Minister reassured the public that the government had already responded to the U.S. inquiry, reaffirming the nation’s commitment to international law.
On the subject of reports claiming that Saint Lucia has been added to a U.S. watchlist, Prime Minister Pierre clarified that no official communication had been received from Washington. He urged the public to avoid speculation.
"We have made inquiries through our Washington office, and they have indicated that there is no official notification. As of now, the only information we have is from media reports."
Pierre also addressed concerns about potential sanctions and their broader implications, stressing the importance of diplomacy and careful communication in dealing with sensitive international matters.
"Saint Lucia must always be cautious about reckless statements. In our political exuberance, we must not say things that could be used against us," he warned.
Shifting focus to domestic issues, the Prime Minister noted significant progress in the country’s crime reduction efforts. He highlighted a 45 percent decrease in homicides compared to the same period last year, attributing the improvement to increased police patrols, intelligence gathering, and additional resources.
"On Friday, we provided the police with three new vehicles and welcomed 62 new special police constables to bolster law enforcement efforts," he added.
Prime Minister Pierre reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to public safety, economic stability, and strong diplomatic relations. He assured citizens that Saint Lucia would continue to engage with international partners to safeguard the nation’s interests, while always prioritizing the well-being of its people.
