Dr. Merle Hodge, cultural and social activist, will speak on the topic, "What's the Use of Culture"
The University of the West Indies Open Campus Saint Lucia, will host the 5th Annual Patricia Charles Memorial Lecture. This year's activity will feature special Guest Speaker, Dr Merle Hodge (MPhil. London University; PhD. University of the West Indies).
Dr. Hodge will deliver the lecture at The UWI Open Campus, Morne Fortune, on Wednesday June 25th, 2014 at 7:00 p.m.
An engaging speaker, Dr. Hodge's chosen lecture topic "What's the Use of Culture" is guaranteed to be thought provoking and the source of much lively discussion following the lecture.
Dr. Hodge is a former Senior Lecturer of the University of the West Indies, where she taught Academic Writing; Creative Writing; West Indian Literature and a course on African-American Women Writers.
Apart from her work at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine, as Lecturer, Coordinator and Facilitator of Creative Writing workshops, Dr. Hodge has also served as a resource person and active member of several NGOs.
A cultural and social activist (co-founder of Women Working for Social Progress) and writer, Dr. Hodge worked with the Maurice Bishop regime in Grenada to develop a National In-service Teacher Education Programme, which sought to upgrade and expand teacher education. Her work was specifically in the area of Language Arts.
She has published two novels: Crick Crack, Monkey and For the Life of Laetitia; Short Stories; Academic Papers; Articles in Caribbean and International Journals; and a textbook, The Knots in English: A Manual for Caribbean Users.
