An early morning three-hour live television broadcast from the Derek Walcott Square in down-town Castries, on Monday, 14 October 2002 signalled the official start of a special week of programming in observance of the first anniversary of St. Lucia?s public service broadcast entity - The National Television Network (NTN).
Launched on October 14th, 2001, the network is widely believed to have met its mandate by changing the media landscape on the island while dramatically increasing local programming. Monday's broadcast featured interviews with local TV pioneers, independent production companies and a clutch of features reflective of NTN's programming mandate which places emphasis on education, information and entertainment.
The advent of NTN has lead to increased news coverage of government activities both in English and Kweyol. The network produces and weekly fifteen (15) minute new review feature dubbed Take Two along with a daily five minute newscast in Kweyol called Nouvel Nou Menm. Another significant achievement for NTN in its first year was the staging of a weekly series of interactive programmes that featured parliamentarians and their constituencies.
Director of the Information Services Embert Charles notes that with the many milestones achieved during the first year of operations, the network was gearing up to surpass and in the process continue to radically change the media landscape on the island. NTN will be airing the interviews with TV pioneers daily beginning Monday night at 8 pm.
