NTN - "Alternative Television"?Launches This Weekend

Prime Minister and Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Honourable Dr. Kenny D Anthony will deliver the feature address at the official launching of the newly established National Television Network (NTN). Dr. Anthony is expected to outline some of his thoughts on the role of public service broadcasting in the current economic and political global environment.
The formal launching ceremony will be held at the official residence of the Prime Minister at Vigie on Sunday 14th October and starts at 5.30 p.m. The evening's programme will be broadcast live on Cablevision channel two, and includes cultural presentations by the Young Ideals, Ives Simeon, Tambou Melee, St. Lucia poet Kendel Hippolyte, and an address by the Director of Information Services, Embert Charles.

"Test transmissions for the National Television Network (NTN), started in May this year with extensive trial broadcasting coming on stream in July. Cabinet formally established the new televisions station in September. The National Television Network (NTN) will be operated out of the studios of the Government Information Service, and programming will be under the supervision of the Principal Information Officer. A small editorial advisory committee has been established to assist in the management of the new television station,"Charles added.

The content of the NTN programming will be largely local and regional, comprising of news and news features produced by the Government Information Service, features and documentaries from local and regional independent video and television producers, and selected programmes from regional and international governmental and non-governmental agencies.

The NTN will commence daily broadcasts from 6.00 p.m. with four hours of programmes which will be repeated until the following morning, when a three hour special programme on tourism produced by Visual Domain Ltd, will be broadcast.

NTN is expected to provide a wide range of alternative programming catering for all segments of the audience including senior citizens and children.
