PRIMARY CARE FACILITIES OFFER FREE SCREENINGS, PAP SMEARS.
Free screenings and pap tests are being offered around the island as Saint Lucia joins the world in observing Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. The month of January is used annually to intensify awareness and education programs surrounding cervical cancer. According to the Centers for Disease Control, cancer remains the second leading cause of death.
In Saint Lucia, the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs undertakes continuous education programs on preventative care for cancer. These activities are often hosted in primary care facilities and in communities around the island.
“Within the month of January, within the month of February, all facilities are conducting pap smears at the various Health Centres. You can go in or call to make an appointment to have your pap smear done. We really want to encourage women to continue doing their cervical screenings. This is extremely, extremely important,” said Julietta Frederick-Cassius, Principal Nursing Officer within the Community Nursing Services.
The Ministry of Health remains steadfast in its campaigns focused on the fight against the scourge of cancer. The Human Papillomavirus Virus (HPV), is a leading cause of cervical cancer and presents in different types. The Principal Nursing Officer said the HPV Vaccine is the Ministry’s method of dealing with the Human Papillomavirus Virus.
“One of our primary care strategies is when we introduced the Human Papillomavirus Virus (HPV) vaccine to our young population. Children aged 9 to 12 can receive the HPV vaccine. It is being given at a young age to reduce exposure to the HPV virus.”
The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs, is encouraging regular check-ups to ensure a good health status. The free clinics are expected to extend through February.
