NOROVIRUS SPREADS RAPIDLY IN ENVIRONMENTS WITH INADEQUATE SANITATION. SYMPTOMS INCLUDE VOMITING, DIARRHEA AND ABDOMINAL DISCOMFORT.
Over the past five weeks, health facilities have seen a steady increase in individuals presenting with symptoms including vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort. Recent lab tests have confirmed Norovirus as the primary cause of these illnesses.
According to Dr. Dana DaCosta Gomez, Medical Surveillance Officer in the Ministry of Health.
"We have observed a clear uptick in gastroenteritis presentations at various healthcare facilities island wide. Stool samples analyzed by our laboratory confirm Norovirus as a key contributor in this wave,” she noted.
Norovirus is a highly contagious virus known to spread rapidly in environments with poor hygiene and inadequate sanitation. It is often transmitted through person-to-person contact, contaminated food or water, and unclean surfaces. Common sources of contamination include raw shellfish, fresh produce, and ready-to-eat foods handled by infected individuals.
“Even as few as 10 viral particles can cause an infection. This virus is extremely resilient, capable of surviving on surfaces for several days, and can spread through airborne particles when someone vomits. It’s especially dangerous for young children and the elderly due to the risk of dehydration,” explained Dr. Gomez.
To reduce transmission, the Ministry advises the public to:
• Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water, especially after using the toilet and before handling food.
• Avoid preparing meals when experiencing vomiting or diarrhea.
• Disinfect commonly touched surfaces.
• Boil water if its quality is uncertain.
• Avoid returning to work or school until at least 24 hours after symptoms stop.
The Ministry is also urging those with symptoms to visit their nearest Wellness Centre if their condition does not improve. Stool samples may be requested as part of ongoing public health surveillance.
The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as needed.
