With a symbolic sod-turning ceremony at the Gros-Islet Polyclinic, the Ministry of Health, Wellness & Elderly Affairs has officially launched critical infrastructural upgrades as part of its commitment to achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in Saint Lucia. This initiative marks a major step in transforming the facility into a 24-hour operation, ensuring that residents have continuous access to essential healthcare services.

The planned improvements include the expansion and modernization of the Accident & Emergency Unit, allowing for faster and more efficient patient care. Additionally, new doctors’ offices will be introduced to increase consultation spaces, ensuring a more effective patient flow. 

Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Wellness & Elderly Affairs, Mr. Ernest Norbal, emphasized the strategic approach taken in executing these upgrades. “The expansion of the Gros Islet Polyclinic is a critical step towards strengthening Saint Lucia’s healthcare system. The Ministry has adopted a phased approach in reconfiguration and retrofitting, ensuring minimal disruption to patient care,” stated Deputy Permanent Secretary, Norbal.

Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Sharon Belmar-George, highlighted the Ministry’s broader vision for healthcare accessibility. “At the Ministry of Health, we are working towards the establishment and strengthening of strategically placed emergency and urgent care facilities with extended hours of operation. This initiative will encompass basic diagnostic services and significantly improve access to timely, quality, and equitable healthcare,” she explained.

The infrastructural works at the Gros Islet Polyclinic are expected to continue for approximately four months. Parliamentary Representative for Gros-Islet, Hon. Kenson Joel Casimir, praises the collaborative efforts behind the project. “I am proud to be part of an administration where the Minister of Health and the Prime Minister come together to discuss strategic solutions that address healthcare challenges in a holistic manner.”

The upgrades will also feature a dedicated staff lounge to enhance the comfort and well-being of healthcare professionals. Minister for Health, Wellness & Elderly Affairs, Hon. Moses Jn. Baptiste, praised the dedication of healthcare professionals at the facility. “Those of you who have worked at the Gros Islet Polyclinic, the nurses, doctors, and health aides have served tirelessly as this facility remains the preferred choice for many Saint Lucians. This development will transform the polyclinic into a 24-hour facility, ultimately reducing the pressure on the Owen King EU Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit and moving Saint Lucia closer to achieving Universal Health Coverage,” explained Minister Jn. Baptiste.

Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, Hon. Philip J. Pierre, further reaffirmed the government’s commitment to healthcare, emphasizing its importance in national development. “Health is a priority. This is why it is central to the 2025 Independence theme and celebration: Health and Wellness for a Prosperous Nation.’ While resources may be limited, we remain committed to providing the best possible healthcare services for our people,” stated the Prime Minister.

During this period, all healthcare services at the facility will remain fully operational. The Ministry acknowledges that there may be temporary inconveniences, including noise and restricted access to certain areas, and appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation as these necessary upgrades take place.
