THE INCREASES WILL CONTINUE TO MAKE TANGIBLE DIFFERENCES IN ELDER CARE, SCHOLARSHIPS AND HOUSING FOR THE VULNERABLE.
The Ministry of Equity, Social Justice, and Empowerment has secured a landmark budget allocation of close to $60M for the 2025-2026 fiscal year, underscoring the government's unwavering commitment to uplifting the nation's most vulnerable citizens.
Minister for Equity, Social Justice, and Empowerment, Hon. Joachim Henry, emphasized that these increases will continue to make tangible differences, particularly in elder care, scholarships for tertiary education, housing assistance, and medical support. He reaffirmed that these investments are part of a broader vision to foster social equity and ensure no Saint Lucian is left behind.
Reflecting on the government's strengthened social policies, Minister Henry highlighted the substantial funding increases across multiple sectors, benefiting those in need.
"The feeding program in my constituency receives an injection of $30,000 annually. You understand why I can sing the chorus, 'Smile, smile a while, and give your face a rest.' Mr. Speaker, the Family Childcare program has received $38,368, the transit home $15,000, and public assistance has seen a remarkable boost. Previously allocated $10 million, the Prime Minister has increased it by $3,277,000, allowing us to extend much-needed aid to those on the waiting list. Home care services, which received $9 million annually, have been increased by another $1 million, bringing the total to $10 million, older and vulnerable individuals will now receive the essential care they deserve."
The government has introduced a new $5 million Infrastructure Development Program (IDP) to enhance community infrastructure and boost development. This initiative will improve essential infrastructure in key areas, ensuring more sustainable and accessible communities for all citizens.
Recognizing the pivotal role of faith-based organizations in social support, the government has also allocated $500,000 to religious groups involved in charitable work. This funding will empower these organizations to expand their outreach and provide critical assistance to those in need.
"You'll understand why the Barre Denis Pentecostal Church will get some support. You understand why the Tros Piton Church of God will get some support with their training of young persons; the SDA Church will also get some support. Other religious organizations engaged in charitable initiatives will also receive assistance across the island, thanks to these new interventions championed by this administration."
Minister Henry reaffirmed the government's steadfast commitment to fostering an equitable and just society, emphasizing that these new allocations are more than just numbers, saying that they represent a bold step towards a future where every Saint Lucian, regardless of circumstance, has access to the resources and opportunities they need to thrive.
