Renowned cultural activist Cypriani Frank Norville passed away at the Victoria Hospital yesterday, at the age of 70.
The son of a Saint Lucian mother, Frank Norville was born in Barbados on April 10, 1944. After his mother’s death, Mr. Norville and his oldest sister migrated to Saint Lucia.
He was a long time photographer, actor and dancer. Among his many talents, he was best known for is his work as a singer, musician and composer; and his contribution to the development of Saint Lucian folk music.
Mr. Norville was instrumental in preserving Saint Lucian culture. He arranged and recorded a large repertoire of Saint Lucian folk music, was the author of a booklet on the folk dances of Saint Lucia, and in 1983 published a comprehensive compilation of the island’s most popular folk music titled "Songs of St Lucia: Folk Songs."
In 1973 he was appointed to the Government Information Service as an audio-visual technician, where he served energetically for thirteen years. He moved from the GIS to become a cultural officer in the Ministry of Education and Culture in 1986.
