Cadet is the first inductee of the Cultural Icon’s Project, a venture that aims to honor those who have helped shape Saint Lucian culture.
The Cultural Development Foundation (CDF) recently launched the Cultural Icons Project, an undertaking that aims to illustrate the work and worth of visual artists, actors, dancers, writers, musicians and folk artists who have contributed to shaping the Saint Lucian identity.
The Icons Project is an inspirational undertaking spearheaded by the CDF that will pay tribute to Saint Lucian icons and share their histories, experiences and inspiration. Being named and celebrated as an Icon, will be an honor reserved for those who have either a lifetime of substantial contributions or a shorter-term impact so impressive or ground-breaking that it warrants honoring. The celebrations will also enable the public to enjoy an illustration of the Icon’s work, and impact on Saint Lucia.
In honor of the first inducteee of the Icons Project, the CDF, in collaboration with the Saint Lucia School of Music, will treat the public to a concert titled Ode to an Artist – Celebrating Charles Cadet.
The concert will be held on Sunday, Dec. 14 at the National Cultural Centre. Approximately 100 performers will take the audience on an exciting journey through the life and work of Charles Cadet. Traditional favorites will mingle with R&B interpretations, exciting arrangements and entirely new works like “The Folk Requiem—La Fin Journee,” arranged by Gregory Piper.
Other artistes include The Royal Saint Lucia Police Band, the St. Lucia School of Music Youth Orchestra, The Cecilian Rays, members of the Just Us and Cathedral Choirs, Shirley-Ann Cyril, Elra Ermay, Barbara Cadet, Lennie Stone, Minelle, Sari I Shyne, Shane Ross, TC Brown, Teddyson John, Blue Mango, and Boo Hinkson.
The concert will also feature a visiting Associate Professor of Music Composition from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, and his wife, a highly accomplished Choral Director, who are both on a one-year residency at the Saint Lucia School of Music.
