IN A PROACTIVE MOVE TO ENHANCE THE PRODUCTIVITY AND EFFICIENCY OF APICULTURE FARMERS, THE MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE HAS LAUNCHED A SPECIALIZED FARMER FIELD SCHOOL PROGRAM FOCUSED ON BEEKEEPING AND HONEY PRODUCTION.

In a proactive move to enhance the productivity and efficiency of apiculture farmers, the Ministry of Agriculture has launched a specialized Farmer Field School program focused on beekeeping and honey production.

 

The Farmer Field School program, aligned with the Ministry's vision of achieving food and nutrition security, aims to significantly improve the performance of farmers in the apiculture sector. This eight-week program equips farmers with practical knowledge and skills through a combination of theory and hands-on exercises.

 

The June 13 to 15 training session encouraged interactive discussions examined

 

strengthened the skillset of participants receive training in various aspects such as hive management, beekeeping best practices, disease control, honey harvesting, quality standards, and marketing strategies, with the goal of promoting sustainable growth.

 

Recognizing the pivotal role of standards in ensuring quality and competitiveness, Andre Charles, Head of Standard Development at the St. Lucia Bureau of Standards, emphasized the importance of the draft apiculture code of practice and honey specification in fostering standardized practices within the industry.

 

"These standards play a crucial role for beekeepers and apiaries, as they ensure a consistent, high-quality product. While voluntary, the code of practice and specifications serve as valuable guidance documents to achieve the best outcomes in the beekeeping industry," stated Charles.

 

The Ministry of Agriculture remains committed to prioritizing the growth of the agriculture sector. Charis Auguste-Hyacinth, Apiculture Coordinator attached to the Veterinary and Livestock Services Division, highlighted the objective of the Farmer Field School program to equip farmers with the necessary tools and techniques for success in apiculture.

 

Auguste-Hyacinth explained "Our focus is specifically on honey production, aiming to increase productivity and efficiency for farmers. With the support of the Prime Minister and adequate funding, this eight-week program provides three weeks of theory followed by practical training to boost productivity. Additionally, farmers will have the opportunity to join a mentorship program for three years to further enhance their productivity.”

 

By providing essential knowledge and practical skills, the Farmer Field School program, led by the Ministry of Agriculture, empowers apiculture farmers, and propels them towards sustainable growth and promising opportunities in the agricultural landscape.
