A RECENT PANEL DISCUSSED THE CONCERNS AND CHALLENGES FACED BY THE LGBTQ YOUTH COMMUNITY.
The 2022 LGBTQ+ Pride celebrations in Saint Lucia culminated with an Aug. 29 panel discussion. The discussion explored government interventions, family support and the role of the education system in fostering the safety and inclusion of LGBTQ+ youth.
Human Rights and Youth Advocate, Yakub Nestor, provided insight into the challenges faced by youth of the community.
“Many young people are concerned with how society perceives them as an LGBTQ youth, and the dangers and challenges that come with it. Questions like: Is my life going to be constantly at risk? Would I be able to get a job as a LGBTQ person? Would I be stigmatized for walking in my truth and being who I am,” he explained.
The panelists discussed how young people can develop resilience to cope with the challenges they face.
Dania Abraham, the Communications Officer of United and Strong, said youth activists need to provide positive reinforcements for LGBTQ youth.
“Youth who identify as LGBTQ need to find a way to be comfortable with themselves, but as youth advocates and activists we can help show positive role models whether those role models are ourselves or other people. Having someone to look up to will help LGBTQ youth to live their truth.”
The panel discussion was held at the studios of the Government Information Service.
