Saint Lucia records 42 new cases of COVID-19

THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH ALSO CONFIRMED THE RECOVERY OF 18 INDIVIDUALS; AND THREE DEATHS.

The Ministry of Health and Wellness late Saturday March 13, 2021 received confirmation of 42 new cases of COVID-19 from the Ezra Long Laboratory. These results are from a batch of 192 samples taken during the period March 10, 2021 to March 12, 2021. The samples were processed on March 12, 2021.

All of the forty two cases were seen at various community respiratory clinics where they were assessed and tested for COVID-19. In keeping with the COVID-19 testing protocols, they were each placed in home quarantine by healthcare practitioners while awaiting receipt of their test results. Arrangements have been made to place these newly diagnosed cases in isolation. The contact tracing for these new cases is underway.

Confirmation was also received of the recovery of 18 individuals diagnosed with COVID-19. This brings the total number of active cases currently recorded in country to date to 204. Presently, three of the active cases require critical care at the Respiratory Hospital. The new cases bring the total number of cases diagnosed in country to date to 4031.

The Ministry of Health also reports three COVID-19 related deaths bringing the total number of deaths in country to 51. Death #49 is a 94 year old female from the Babonneau district with underlying medical illnesses. Death #50 is a 37 year old female from the Gros-Islet district. Death #51 is an 84 year male from the Castries district with underlying medical illness. All of these individuals were in care at the time of their passing. The Ministry of Health expresses condolences to the family and loved ones of these individuals. 

The Ministry of Health is pleased to announce that as of March 12, 2021 Saint Lucia has vaccinated a total of 17, 389 individuals. For the coming week March 15 to March 19, 2021, the Ministry of Health will place its focus on vaccinating individuals who are homebound and unable to visit the vaccinations sites to get vaccinated. These individuals are encouraged call the Community Wellness Centre nearest to them.

Every citizen is reminded to continue practicing the infection prevention and control measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19:

  • -  Wash your hands frequently using soap and flowing water

  • -  Wear a mask in public places and ensure it covers the mouth, chin and nose

  • -  Maintain a physical distance from others

  • -  Use a bleach solution to sanitize frequently touched surfaces and frequently handled objects - Avoid contact with other people who have flu-like symptoms
    - If you are experiencing flu-like symptoms, keep away from others and seek medical care
