The Civil Status Registry has been successfully engaged in re-engineering its processes and renewing its image.

Permanent Secretary Dr. Rufina Frederick said the restructuring of the Civil Status Registry is still ongoing, and indicated that Saint Lucians can expect more changes to come into effect by January 2015.

Other operational improvements will continue to be implemented during the course of the New Year, she added.

The Civil Status Registry has been successfully engaged in re-engineering its processes and renewing its image for the better part of 2014. The process has taken the department closer to fulfilling the vision of the Government and has positively impacted the quality of service delivery and efficiency.

The registry’s changes include improvements to the work environment, which include more comfortable space for workers and the general public. A one-stop concept has also been introduced, so that customers can access all required services under one roof.

Two new acts—the Civil Status (Amendment) Act, No. 10 of 2014 and the Code of Civil Procedure (Amendment) Act, No. 7 of 2014—now provide a basis for resolving name-related issues, as well as minor omissions and spelling errors in entries in the Registers of Civil Status. In the case of simple rectifications like the insertion of a child’s name on his or her birth certificate, 4,600 rectifications have been undertaken between May and November, 2014. For rectifications requiring more detailed amendments to vital records, between January and November the Adjudicator’s Office has undertaken 4,500. Rectifications done by the Civil Status Registry cost $63.00 dollars each.

Minister for Legal Affairs, Home Affairs and National Security, Senator the Hon.Victor Philip La Corbiniere, recently visited the Civil Status Registry and the Office of the Adjudicator. Following the meeting the Minister said he was satisfied with the level of progress made. He also expressed his gratitude to the Permanent Secretary and staff for their efforts at ensuring significant improvement in the services offered to the public.
