The Bordelais Correctional Facility (BCF) has initiated a library program that assists with the rehabilitation of inmates by allowing them to borrow books for personal reading and subsequent group discussions.
As a rehabilitation tool the library provides access to a wide range of written material that can help inmates improve their literacy skills or sharpen their existing skills. It also provides them with the opportunity to pass the time productively.
“The program has been very successful and responses from inmates have been very positive,” said Manager for the library program, Casilda Severin. “However, we would like to encourage the public to donate books to the library as this will add diversity to the library’s stock and sustain interest among the inmates.”
According to the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning, prison libraries take on central roles in creating the means through which lifelong learning can occur.
"Although the books and resources give inmates a general opportunity to direct their thoughts away from the prison environment," the website states, "the main value of the prison library is in providing its users with the option of further education and self-reflection, obtaining life skills and improving their reading skills. Moreover, it is believed that a person who comes to appreciate reading during his or her time in prison has better chances of successful reintegration after release from custody."
Persons who are interested in donating books to the BCF’s library program are asked to contact the Bordelais Correctional Facility at telephone number 758.468.7100, or fax number 758.468.7139. Donations can also be mailed to: Bordelais Correctional Facility, PO Box 105, Dennery, Saint Lucia.
